Ready for Life, Life Changing Lesson, volunteering event

Ready for Life, Inc. (RFL) is a not-for-profit 501 C. 3 who serves youth in Pinellas Counties 15 – 25 years old that are in foster care or have already transitioned out and are on their own.

In need of about 10 volunteers for a very special event on August 16 (times vary starting from 3p and ending at around 7:30pm). What we’re up to is helping the young adults we serve fill in some skill gaps with a Life Changing Lesson in how to Stretch their food budget! Take a look at what we’ve got going on, and we so hope you’ll be able to join the fun! If you are interested in volunteering please let me know.

We need volunteers to:

  • Help set up (3pm)
  • Loan us some pots and pans and kitchen utinsels for each of the meal stations below
  • Demo at each station (4:30-7)
  • Help clean up (7-7:30p)
  • Help hand out food at the end of the night (6 – 7p)
  • Help serve dinner in the kitchen (4:30 – 7 ish pm)
  • NOTE: we are hoping to have a church group cook the chicken meals so that we can have those for dinner

 Additional details:

On August 16, we have the Silly Sinatra’s providing materials we need for a Meal Planning lesson! As you may know, our Emergency Needs food pantry provides emergency food supplies when the young people we serve don’t have enough food to make it to the end of the month or their next pay check. As with all that we do at RFL, we are up to more than just filling the need, we also want to be filling in the skill gaps behind the emergency needs so that the crisis don’t recur in the future! For food emergencies, one way we fill in these gaps is with what we call “Meal Kits” provided to help those we serve learn how to use leftover chicken to stretch their food budget. The pantry is stocked with these simple “kits” and the young people can take them home with recipe cards to use their leftovers. This program has been such a big learning lesson for the young adults, and we are THRILLED to announce this partnership with the Silly Sinatra’s to provide the food and all the learning to so many all at one time!

NOW HERE IS THE BEST PART!!! --Thanks to the Silly Sinatra’s, each RFL young adult attending will get to go home with a frozen chicken, starch and veggies for dinner one night AND a full meal kit to make leftover chicken tacos!

We will have four Meal Kit Stations set up with a volunteer at each station demonstrating how to prepare the meal. It’s not cooking lessons, and we won’t be doing any actual cooking, just sharing the information, and a few helpful hints on how to prepare the items for each of the meal kits so the volunteering is easy, we just need a lot of hands to help!
